Farewell Marc Dürr

    Posted on November 5, 2010

A few days ago I was really sad to hear that a good friend and fellow desert naturalist had passed away.  Marc Dürr was a special kind of person, with a passion for the Namib that only a hand full of people had.

Marc started the well known Tok-tokkie trails on the NamibRand Nature Reserve south of Sesriem.

Marc was passionate about all sorts of things related to the environment, and was a key person in helping NaDEET environmental education center come into existence.

If You Could Do It All

    Posted on November 3, 2010

If you had the chance to visit the entire Namibia, where would you go.  I'll try to give you a round up of all the spots.  It could never be complete, but it is certainly a good starting point.

Imagine this conversation: "Where did you go in Namibia", "Well, I basically did the whole thing", "Oh, can you tell me all the spots you did"

Why do I create a post like this?  The thinking behind it is to give you a good starting point for planning any trip to Namibia - to get a general overview of what is here.

My Ideal Field Guide List For Namibia

    Posted on October 27, 2010

When I visit someone that I don't know that well in their home, I love looking at the bookshelf, it's a little window onto people's world.  If I see a nice collection of field guides, I know we have common ground and look forward to having a glass of wine with them.

I would argue that your field guides are more than just tools, their a statement of your interests, your passions.

Water | Blog Action Day 2010

    Posted on October 15, 2010

Namibia is one of the world's driest countries, and the issues of water are significant for both the environment and for people.  But that problem isn't unique to Namibia - in actual fact it is something that you can get involved in right where you live.  Small little habits - buying drinking water, the way you use your toilet, your taps, how you brush your teeth - there are many ways to make small efforts.

But today there is a massive focus in blogs throughout the world on water, and you have the opportunity to join the UN in making an impact on water issues worldwide.

Desert Rain and Giddy Springbok

    Posted on October 11, 2010

So often when I was guiding in the Namib, guests would say something like "when it rains we hear the desert turns green overnight" or "does that grass grow to full size in a week".  There really are a lot of these assumptions, and the guiding community doesn't do much to set things straight.

With the first hints at rain for the summer in Namibia, it has got me thinking about rain again - I'm a desert boy, I can't help it.  I lived through a drought in 1984 in northern Kenya and saw, as a small boy, the devastating effect of rain on people, animals and landscapes.  That drought, of course, was the same one that was spread throughout much of Ethiopia, not to far north from where we lived.
